Chateau d’Agassac is a real jewel in the crown that is the left bank of Bordeaux. It is located in Ludon-Médoc, just 15 minutes or so from Bordeaux on the way to Margaux. The chateau itself is one of the oldest in the area, dating back at least the 13th Century. Dutch engineers drained the Medoc marsh in the 17th Century to facilitate shipping of goods, which revealed gravel soils ideal for growing grapes, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. Vineyards were originally planted not that much later.
The 1932 Cru Bourgeois Classification. had several references to Agassac, and the Chateau has regularly appeared in the listings since. When the Classification was overhauled to include three levels in 2020, the Chateau applied for and was awarded the highest designation of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, a testament to its quality and reputation.
The chateaux has changed hands numerous times over the centuries. In 1996 it was purchased by Groupama, the giant French insurance company, which undertook a major restructuring of the vineyards as well as restoration of the chateau and surrounding lands. The estate began practicing sustainable viticulture from the 2000s and has since obtained the highest level of HVE (high environmental value) certification. Gérard Jicquel, a French entrepreneur, bought the Chateau in the Spring of 2021 and installed Lucas Leclercq as Director General and Winemaker to continue the tradition of this great historical treasure.
