Chateau Barrabaque is a small estate located on the right bank of the river Gironde in the Canon Fronsac appellation. They own 10 hectares located on south-facing slopes overlooking the Dordogne region which straddle both the Fronsac and Canon Fronsac appellation. The vineyards are mainly planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with soils being primarily of clay and limestone. The owners follow the eco-friendly policy of integrated agriculture (lutte raisonnée). Careful vineyard management (de-budding, green pruning, grass growing between rows) allows the vineyards to produce optimum yields and the estate has eliminated the use of all chemical herbicides and insecticides.
Chateau Barrabaque Cuvée Antoine is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vines with an average age of 35 years old. The grapes are harvested by hand and there is a double sorting at the Chateau prior to destemming the grapes. The grapes undergo a period of cold maceration followed by temperature regulated fermentation in cement vat. The wine is then aged for 12 to 15 months in second and third fill barrels.
A fruity and powerful nose revealing aromas of cassis, blackberry, violets and a touch of sweet spices. On the palate, this wine shows notes of blackberry jam, raspberry along with a touch of cassis, licorice and toasted oak. Tannins are fine, elegant and slightly firm. Good length.
Drink now or cellar for 8 to 10 years. Enjoy with grilled red meats, richer stews or cheese.
