L’Unique is pure fun, a blend of Grenache (40%), Syrah (20%), Mourvèdre (20%), Marselan (15%) and Merlot (5%) which has been macerated for 25 days in stainless steel vats and thermos-regulated concrete. Partial whole bunch fermentation results in a certain amount of intercellular fermentation, which enhances floral and fruity aromas. Inclusion of the stems also helps to impart some spiciness and reduce alcohol slightly as well. The aging lasts 6 months in concrete vats before being bottled in the spring. This is bursting with raspberry compote and ripe strawberry fruit notes as well as ample spice and floral characteristics. With medium to full-bodied richness, a rounded texture, and ample tannins, it’s a thrilling Vin de France that you can enjoy on its own or with grilled meats. This is for those who love cru Beaujolais and Cote du Rhone! 14.5% alc
The history of the Usseglio family dates back to 1931, the year in which Francis Usseglio left Italy to settle in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and bagan work there as an agricultural worker. In 1948, he had the opportunity to exploit 8 hectares of vines as a sharecropper and his son Pierre took over and developed a family estate. Now comprising 39 hectares including 25 from Châteauneuf-du-Pape , 6 from Lirac, 6 from Côtes-du-Rhône and 2 in AOC Vin de France, the vineyard is managed by Pierre’s two sons: Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio. The two brothers look after a very beautiful heritage of vines, half of which are over 65 years old, as well as a wide variety of terroirs including the famous rolled pebbles but also clay-limestone and sandy soils. The estate has today become a benchmark farm in the region and all production enjoys a very high quality level thanks to superb work in the vineyard and in the cellar.
Based mostly Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah (but there are plenty of other varieties in here), the 2022 Vin De France L’Unique has a ruby hue as well as a rocking Côtes Du Rhône nose of ripe black cherries, peppery garrigue, licorice, and hints of leather. It’s round and medium to full-bodied, with a layered, seamless mouthfeel and a great finish. 91 Points, Jeb Dunnock, Oct 2023
