The best vineyard sites in Piedmont are at the top of the slopes and face south in order to capture the maximum amount of sunlight and heat, crucial to ripening in a cooler climate. Typically these sites are reserved for the Nebbiolo grape, to make into Barolo or Barbaresco, since they command the highest prices. This means that the Barbera grape is relegated less esteemed locations, such as at the bottom of slopes where cool air gathers. The result is less than perfect grapes and wine that can be lean and high in acid. Not so in Nizza Monferrato. This little commune South East of Asti is outside the zone of production for Barolo and Barbaresco and so there is no incentive to plant Nebbiolo on the best sites. Instead they plant Barbera and create the greatest expression of the grape anywhere in Italy. Yields are kept low to concentrate flavours and wines have strict aging requirements. In 2014, the zone was recognized for its high quality by being awarded DOCG status, the highest wine classification in Italy, alongside the likes of Barolo, Brunello, Amarone, etc.. There are only 43 producers of Nizza, so it can be difficult to find. But well-worth it!
The 2018 Ceretti Nizza Ceret-One is sourced from the Ceretti family’s best vineyards, and aged for 18 months in large oak barrels. Dense, ruby red in colour. This wine is bold. Rich and ripe fruit characteristics, with soft and supple tannins. The alcohol is 14.5%, but the natural acidity in the grape keeps the wine from feeling heavy and clumsy. Overall, it is complex and balanced, refined, yet intense. Aromas of dark plum and blackberry underpinned by black pepper. On the palate, the spicy and fruity aromas are mirrored, with added notes of cocoa, coffee and herbs.
Drink now or cellar for up to 8 years. Pair with Osso Bucco, Mushroom Pizza, Prosciutto, Meatballs in Tomato Sauce, Fontina or Taleggio Cheese.
