Coteaux du Giennois is a Loire appellation for Sauvignon Blanc about five kilometres from Sancerre and Pouilly Fume. It has the same flinty and chalky soils as these more famous regions but the vineyards are a little further away from the Loire river, making the growing environment slightly warmer. How does it differ from Sancerre? It tends to have a similar stony minerality, but the fruit is, perhaps, a little riper there is a shade less acidity. However, Coteaux du Giennois makes a remarkably close alternative to Sancerre at about $10 to $15 less per bottle.
The 2021 Domaine de Villargeau Coteaux du Giennois is pale yellow with silvery green highlights. The nose is quite pronounced with notes of candied apricots, citrus and a touch of fresh sage. The palate is fresh with great minerality. There is a grainy, saline texture with replays of the grapefruit/citrus from the nose as well as some slightly more exotic fruits, such as peach, melon, passionfruit or gooseberry.
Drink now and over the next 3 to 4 years. Pair with goat cheese, asparagus omelet or quiche, white-fleshed fish, roast pork
