In keeping with the best reds of Marche, this Rosso Piceno is mostly Montepulciano (85%) with the balance Sangiovese. The vines sit at 290 metres on medium textured soil, clay-sand with 3,500 vines per ha. The yield is 55 hl-ha. Grapes are hand-picked and fully destemmed. After crushing, fermentation takes place in concrete tanks and then spends 12 months on fine lees. After a year, the wine goes into 24hl Slavonian botti where it spends an additional 12 months.
The 2020 Rosso Piceno Superiore is a lovely red – perfect to enjoy everyday! The nose shows black cherry, plum and red currants supported by hints of baking spices and sandalwood. The palate is medium bodied with ripe fruit yet refreshing acidity and a soft velvet feel that makes the wine supremely drinkable.
Enjoy this now and over the next 5 to 7 years with pasta and tomato sauce, gourmet pizza, grilled lamb chops – honestly, almost anything!
The Piceno Superiore ’20 is magnificent: a graceful spiciness announces intense yet tender fruity aromas and light toasted traces that melt into a substantial palate, capable of combining contrast and savory momentum with great effectiveness; this structural harmony is due to the measured alcohol content and tasty tannins; in the finish it gains almost floral tones. All this at a price that will make your eyes water. Three Glasses, Gambero Rosso, 2025
